LGW Airport WiFi: Free Networks, Speeds & a Safer Alternative

Gatwick Airport offers free WiFi, but speed caps and security risks make it unreliable for work or sensitive browsing. An eSIM gives you private, fast data from the moment you land.

Gatwick Airport (LGW) provides free WiFi across both terminals, but the service comes with speed throttling, time limits, and the usual public-network security risks. For travelers who need reliable connectivity for ride-hail apps, hotel check-ins, or work emails, the airport WiFi often falls short.

This guide covers the WiFi networks available at Gatwick, their speed and time restrictions, security warnings, and a safer alternative that works from the moment you land.

WiFi networks at Gatwick Airport

Gatwick offers one primary free WiFi network across both the North and South terminals. The network is open to all passengers, but you must accept terms and conditions before connecting.

WiFi speeds and time limits

The free Gatwick WiFi is capped at around 5 Mbps download speed. That is enough for messaging apps, email, and basic web browsing, but video calls, large file downloads, and streaming will buffer or fail.

Each session lasts four hours. After that, you must reconnect and accept the terms again. For long layovers or delays, this becomes repetitive. The paid premium tier offers higher speeds and a 24-hour window, but it still runs on the same shared airport infrastructure.

Lounge WiFi is faster and more stable, but access requires a lounge pass or premium ticket. For most travelers, the free network is the only option, and it is not designed for heavy use.

Security warning: public WiFi risks

Public airport WiFi is an open network. Anyone on the same network can intercept unencrypted traffic. Even if you stick to HTTPS sites, metadata about which sites you visit can be visible to other users or malicious actors on the network.

Common risks include man-in-the-middle attacks, fake login pages, and session hijacking. If you log into banking apps, work email, or any account with sensitive data over airport WiFi, you are exposing credentials unless you use a VPN.

Even with a VPN, the airport WiFi speed cap and session limits make it unreliable for sustained work. A private mobile data connection avoids these risks entirely.

eSIM alternative: stay connected without the risks

An eSIM gives you private, fast mobile data from the moment you land at Gatwick. You install the eSIM before your flight, and it activates automatically when you arrive in the UK. No airport queue, no WiFi password hunt, no speed caps.

You keep your home SIM active for calls and texts, and the eSIM handles data. Hotspot support is included, so you can share the connection with a laptop or tablet.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the WiFi free at Gatwick Airport?
Yes. Gatwick offers free WiFi across both terminals with a 4-hour session limit and speed cap around 5 Mbps. A paid premium tier is available for faster speeds and 24-hour access.
Is airport WiFi safe to use?
Public airport WiFi is an open network. Unencrypted traffic can be intercepted, and even HTTPS connections expose metadata. Use a VPN if you must connect, or switch to a private mobile data connection like an eSIM.
Is Gatwick Airport WiFi fast enough for video calls?
The free tier is capped at around 5 Mbps, which is marginal for video calls. Expect buffering or dropped connections during peak times. The paid premium tier is faster but still shares airport infrastructure.
Can I buy a SIM card at Gatwick Airport?
Yes. SIM card kiosks are available in both terminals, but they require passport checks, queues, and often charge airport-premium prices. An eSIM installed before departure is faster and usually cheaper.
Should I install an eSIM before landing at Gatwick?
Yes. Installing an eSIM before your flight means you have private, fast data the moment you land. No airport queue, no WiFi password hunt, and no security risks from public networks.
