WiFi speeds and time limits
AOT Free WiFi is capped at approximately 1–2 Mbps download speed. This is sufficient for WhatsApp, email, and basic web browsing, but video calls often drop, Google Maps can be slow to load detailed tiles, and app updates or large file downloads will time out. The 2-hour session limit means you need to reconnect if you are waiting for a long layover or delayed flight.
Carrier-specific networks (TrueMove H WiFi, AIS WiFi) offer slightly better speeds if you already have a Thai SIM or account, but they still throttle during peak hours and require you to log in each session. Paid WiFi kiosks near the gates advertise higher speeds, but pricing is unclear upfront and setup takes time you may not have if you are rushing to immigration or baggage claim.
For travelers who need consistent data from the moment they land — booking a Grab to the city, checking hotel details, or coordinating with travel companions — the airport WiFi is a fallback, not a primary solution.
Security warning
Public WiFi at airports is inherently less secure than a private connection. AOT Free WiFi does not encrypt traffic end-to-end, which means any data you send over the network — login credentials, payment details, personal messages — can be intercepted by anyone else on the same network. Man-in-the-middle attacks are rare but possible, especially on networks that do not require strong authentication.
If you must use airport WiFi, avoid logging into banking apps, entering credit card details, or accessing sensitive accounts unless you are using a VPN. Even with a VPN, the connection is only as reliable as the underlying network speed, and VPNs add latency that can make an already slow connection unusable for real-time tasks.
An eSIM gives you a private, encrypted connection to a local carrier network. You are not sharing bandwidth with hundreds of other travelers, and your data is not passing through a public access point. For travelers who need to access work email, book transport, or check into hotels immediately after landing, the security and speed difference is significant.
eSIM alternative: stay connected from landing
An eSIM installed before you fly gives you data the moment your plane lands. You do not need to find a WiFi network, wait for registration, or deal with speed caps. Your phone connects to a local Thai carrier network (AIS, TrueMove H, or dtac) automatically, and you can start using Grab, LINE, Google Maps, and hotel booking apps while you are still walking to immigration.
