WiFi speeds and time limits
The free ATL WiFi network gives you a short burst of reasonable speed when you first connect, then throttles down to a slower tier after a few minutes. The exact speed varies by terminal congestion, but expect 1–3 Mbps for most of your session. That is enough for email, messaging apps, and light browsing, but video calls will stutter and large file downloads will stall.
Sessions are capped at 30 minutes. When the timer runs out, you are disconnected and must reconnect manually. The network does not warn you before the cutoff, so you may lose an active upload or call mid-session. You can reconnect immediately, but the 30-minute clock restarts each time.
The paid premium tier removes the session limit and offers higher speeds, but pricing varies and you still share the network with hundreds of other travelers. Lounge WiFi is faster and more stable, but you need lounge access to use it.
Security warning: public WiFi risks at ATL
ATL's free WiFi is unencrypted and open to anyone. That means every device on the network can see the traffic of every other device unless you use a VPN or stick to HTTPS sites. Even with HTTPS, metadata like which sites you visit is visible to anyone monitoring the network.
Common risks on public airport WiFi include session hijacking, man-in-the-middle attacks, and fake hotspot traps where an attacker sets up a network with a similar name to the official one. If you connect to the wrong network and enter a password or payment detail, that information is compromised.
Do not log into banking apps, enter credit card numbers, or access work systems over ATL's free WiFi unless you are running a trusted VPN. Even then, the session timeout and speed throttling make it a poor choice for anything beyond checking a flight status or reading news.
eSIM: the safer alternative to ATL airport WiFi
An eSIM gives you private, encrypted cellular data from the moment you land. No shared network, no session timeouts, no throttling after the first few minutes. You install the eSIM before your flight, turn on data when you arrive, and your phone connects to a U.S. carrier network automatically.
eSIMFOX U.S. plans start at competitive rates for short trips and scale up to larger data tiers for longer stays or heavy use. Hotspot is included on most plans, so you can share your connection with a laptop or tablet without hunting for a power outlet near a weak WiFi signal.
Setup takes about 60 seconds. You buy the plan online, receive a QR code by email, scan it in your phone's settings, and the eSIM installs. When you land at ATL, your phone switches to the eSIM data line and you are online before you reach baggage claim.
Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts, so you do not lose your normal number. Two-factor authentication codes, ride-hail apps, hotel check-in messages, and work emails all flow through your usual number while data runs on the eSIM.
